Message from the Board of Education - September 2024
Greetings Friends and Neighbors of the Central Islip School Community,
On behalf of the Board of Education, we welcome you back to school as we together embrace the 2024-2025 academic year and the amazing experiences that await our students.
I would first like to share with you this quote by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., which he authored for "The Purpose of Education," in a 1947 article for Morehouse College's student newspaper: "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education."
The Board of Education works to create a clear vision for our school district's goals. We consistently review and revise district policies that support these goals as appropriate. We are, therefore, committed to a vision of high expectations for student achievement and quality instruction. Our Superintendent of Schools, administration, faculty, and staff work as a team to create a learning environment that is centered around your child's pathway to academic success and personal growth.
As elected members of the Board of Education who represent your interests, we attend workshops, summits, and seminars throughout the school year. We form professional relationships with state and federal elected officials to secure additional funding for which our schools may qualify. We ensure accountability in measuring how well our district is putting its vision into practice, making progress on short- and long-term goals and strategic planning, and understanding policies, successes, and challenges.
We have implemented a fiscally sound budget that supports academic, athletic, music, and art programs; academic intervention and special services; and advanced-level courses designed for all students to achieve success. The Board of Education and administration appreciate your support of the budget, which enables us to implement meritorious programs and complete capital projects that maintain the integrity of our school buildings and grounds.
We encourage you to attend Board of Education meetings, which are held monthly, as well as our winter and spring music concert series and other activities to which teachers invite you throughout the school year.
Finally, thank you for partnering with the Board of Education and school officials to provide an exciting and enriching educational experience for our students to succeed.
Sincerely,
Mr. Luis Alcantara, President
Board of Education
